This brave mother threw herself over her two children as their home collapsed in a deadly tornado that ravaged the South and Midwest.
Heroic mother Stephanie Decker might have lost both legs after laying on top of her two kids to protect them from a tornado, but her son and daughter escaped without a scratch thanks to their mom’s sacrifice, according to The Daily Mail.
The 36-year-old mom threw herself on top of her 8-year-old son Dominic and 5-year-old daughterReese as a tornado that claimed 39 lives swept through their Henryville, Indiana home. She lost one leg above the knee and the other above the ankle, and the family’s home was completely flattened.
But, miraculously, her two kids didn’t suffer a single scratch.
“What I told her was: ‘You’re alive and you get to see your kids grow up,’” Joe Decker says. “There’s no way anybody should’ve lived.”
Joe says he texted his wife from work to warn her that the tornado was approaching their three-story home. She rushed the kids into the basement, and then threw herself on top of them for protection.
Using an iPad at the hospital to explain what happened, Stephanie says the house collapsed and she pulled Reese out of the way. “She doesn’t remember anything after that,” Joe explains.
Little Dominic ran to find neighbors after the storm, and many came to find her even though their own homes had been demolished. Neighbor Brian Lovins used a tourniquet to stop her bleeding and then drove until he could flag down an ambulance.
Stephanie is now breathing on her own and will undergo further surgery.
