The Avengers Destroying Second Weekend Records, Could Hit $100 Million


America’s favorite superheroes continue to dominate the box office in historic fashion.
After shattering records with a $207 million openingThe Avengers is poised for a possible $100 million second weekend, not only throttling the current box office competition, but also topping the previous Week 2 high marks of blockbusters Avatar andThe Dark Knight.
Both of those movies took in $75 million in their second weekends — a figure The Avengers should soar past.
The week’s big new release, Johnny Deppand Tim Burton’s vampire collaboration Dark Shadows, is expected to finish in second place with approximately $28 million.
There’s a giant drop-off to Think Like A Manat #3 ($6.5 million), with the ensemble adaptation finishing ahead of dystopian thriller The Hunger Games ($4.3 million) and romance The Lucky One ($4 million).
The Five-Year Engagement and Pirates! Band of Misfits are both tracking toward $3.2 million finishes.
In eighth place is The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel ($2.8 million), followed by Edgar Allan Poe thriller The Raven and nature film Chimpanzee at $1.4 million.
