The SkechersShape-ups fitness shoes promoted byKim Kardashian, Brooke Burke and other celebs allegedly deceived customers with bogus claims about weight loss and muscle toning, and now the company has agreed to pay $40 million in a settlement.
People who purchased the products are eligible for a refund, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced on Wednesday.
According to the FTC, Skechers made “unfounded claims” about how the Shape-ups and other shoes would give wearers toned “buttocks, legs and abdominal muscles” and other benefits.
Kardashian’s 2011 Super Bowl ad (see below) showed her dumping her personal trainer for Shape-ups.
The commission alleges that Skechers falsely represented that clinical studies had backed up the claims about Shape-Ups, Resistance Runners, Toners and Tone-ups — and that those claims are simply not true.
Skechers is disputing the charges and says it plans to conduct more research.
