Hollywood’s newest release and arguably smartest move was seen in the release of Magic Mike. The idea of ‘sex sells’ is taken to its climax with this movie. With a flick consisting of hot, young guys in thongs one would think the target audience is teen girls wanting to see Channing Tatum in his skivvies. No. This is totally for the menopause market.
When I went to see the movie one would have thought a pack of ravenous cougars had just left their class at Curves and raided the nearest AMC. A script and plot weren’t really necessary since the demands were merely for nudity. There were cheers at every glimpse of cheekage and I was right there along with them.
If there is any movie worthy of 3-D, it’s this one. Naturally, the movie opens with a shot of Channing Tatum’s booty gracing the screen and sets the mood for the rest of the film as the showcase performer, “Magic Mike”. He proceeds to his all-too masculine job as a roofer where he encounters Alex Pettyfer, known as “The Kid”, and takes him under his well-oiled, muscular wing.
Channing Tatum’s character introduces him to the booze and drug fueled world of male stripping and the twosome develop a charming sort of friendship. At the strip club is where we meet the other hunks that get everyone in the audience all hot and bothered. Matthew McConaughey who plays “Dallas,” the bronzed and leather-clad patriarch of this fine group of gentlemen, heads the club. Dallas and his thong-clad troupe adopt “The Kid” into the male stripping world and are there with him as he navigates the debauchery. This is the way in which the movie takes a darker turn as he gets sucked into this lascivious life.
The movie is well aware that it is in the campy, fun, good ol’ time genre and fully puts it to good use. So put down your copy of Fifty Shades of Grey and take yourself out to this meat market of a film.
