Simon Cowell called Jeffrey Gutt’s performance on “The X Factor” on Thursday “one of the most brilliant auditions” he’s ever heard.
The single dad, who was performing in front of his young son for the very first time, earned that distinction by putting his own twist on the Leonard Cohen classic, “Hallelujah.”
Britney Spears, who appeared to tear up, noted how “mysterious” Gutt’s voice was, while Demi Lovato said that he had an “amazing grit… that changed the song completely.”
After a rumble of thunder, she added, “Even God’s rockin’ out right now.”
Said L.A. Reid, “You picked maybe the greatest song ever written and you nailed it. You knocked it out of the park.”
And after Cowell’s effusive praise, it was Gutt who found himself with his eyes welled up.
