Despite some pretty stiff competition, the 2013 Emmy Awards delivered it’s highest audience since 2005.
According to Nielsen, the Neil Patrick Harris hosted show finished with nearly 18 million total viewers, up nearly five million from last year when the show was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and up from 2008′s awards show low of 12.2 viewers. CBS estimates that nearly 40 million viewers tuned in at some point during the ceremony.
And the ratings gain for the awards telecast was all the more impressive because it was up against some pretty stiff competition on other networks, mainly from NBC’s NFL
coverage; the second to last series episode of AMC’s smash Breaking Bad and the series finale of Showtime’s Dexter.

Of course it helped that CBS’ own highly rated NFL coverage of the New York Jets
vs. Buffalo Bills did lead right into the kudocast.
