“The Ellen DeGeneres Show” welcomed Matthew Onyshko, a firefighter whose ALS diagnosis and inspirational attitude have led to incredible sacrifices from his friends in the Pittsburgh fire department, for an emotional segment on Friday.

Supported by his wife Jessica and their two adorable daughters, Onyshko explains, “You make a choice to either have fun or be in pain. We really have nothing to complain about.”
The couple has been overwhelmed by the “love and generosity of other people” willing to help them through Onyshko’s health problems.
That includes his firefighter pals, who have been working extra shifts for years since Onyshko’s diagnosis to make sure he still gets paid and his family is OK.
DeGeneres flew the Onyshko’s to Los Angeles to share their story — but they didn’t know she was going to surprise them with their firefighter pals.
They also didn’t know DeGeneres was about to make her own surprise contributions to the family and the fire department.
