Fifty Shades of Grey Whips Box Office Competition For Second Weekend Win

Fifty Shades of Grey, America’s favorite sextravaganza, stayed atop the box office this weekend. The movie earned $23.2 million, a steep drop of more than 70 percent from last week’s record-setting opening numbers. But it was still more than enough to dominate the competition for the second week in a row.

Kingsman: The Secret Service was again whipped into second place, taking in $17.5 million. In third again was The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water with $15.5 million.

Fourth place was a close battle between teen comedy The Duff, starring Bella Thorne and Mae Whitman, and Kevin Costner’s inspirational sports drama McFarland, USA. The latter just barely came out on top with $11.3 million, compared to $11 million.

American Sniper, now well beyond the $300 million mark overall, continues to rack up box office receipts, taking in another $9.7 million for the weekend and winning sixth place. That put it ahead of Hot Tub Time Machine 2, which flopped with a $5.8 million debut that landed the comedy in the number 7 spot. The Channing Tatum-Mila Kunis space adventure Jupiter Ascending captured 8th place with $3.7 million.

Rounding out the Top 10 were the Oscar-nominated The Imitation Game ($2.6 million), which could win Best Picture at Sunday’s Academy Awards, and the children’s movie Paddington ($2.3 million). What did you see this weekend?
