Michael Phelps is engaged! The Olympic swimmer proposed to his on-and-off again girlfriend Nicole Johnson, a former Miss California, and the happy couple shared the good news on Instagram with a series of photos of the themselves laying in some snow (see below). Phelps captioned his picture, featuring her engagement ring, “She said yes,” while Johnson accompanied her photo with “I’m gonna be a Mrs. [Phelps].”
Phelps and Johnson’s road to the altar has had a few stops and starts. They dated between 2007 and 2008, and then took a break before getting back together shortly before she won the Miss California title in 2010. They then split up around Christmas 2011, and reunited again before Thanksgiving 2014. After their breakups, Extreme Entertainment is told, they still remained friendly and on good terms.
Johnson, for her part, has always been in Phelps’ corner, even after he was busted for drunk driving for the second time in September 2014. In early October 2014, Phelps entered rehab for six weeks, and Extreme Entertainment hears Johnson was there to support him throughout.
Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in history, is slated to compete in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. There’s no word yet whether he and Johnson will tie the knot before or after the games. This will be the first marriage for both Johnson and Phelps.
