VIDEO: News Anchor Calls Lady Gaga’s Oscars Performance “Jigaboo Music”

A Cleveland news anchor used a racial slur while discussing Lady Gaga’s performance at the Oscars. During Monday morning’s FOX 8 broadcast, Kristi Capel had this jaw-dropping reaction to a clip of the Gaga singing: “It’s hard to really hear her voice with all that jigaboo music. Whatever you want to call it… jigaboo!” Wow. Watch the video below.
As you can see from the on-screen graphics, it’s about 6 below zero in Cleveland on Monday, but that probably doesn’t fully explain the chill between Capel and her co-anchor Wayne Dawson. Awkward. Capel later explained on Twitter that she had no clue that what she was saying was offensive. She tweeted to several upset viewers, “I do apologize if I offended you, I didn’t know the meaning behind it or that it was even a word. Thank you for watching.”
The Gaga performance, by the way, received mostly positive reviews from viewers and online commentators alike. She sang a medley of songs from The Sound of Music to commemorate that movie’s 50th anniversary, getting a standing ovation for her efforts. The Sound of Music actress Julie Andrews came out on stage and praised the younger star for her interpretation of classics like “The Hills Are Alive” and “My Favorite Things.” Watch both Kristi Capel’s cringeworthy “jigaboo” gaffe and the Lady Gaga performance that inspired it in the videos below.
