Andy Samberg and Adam Sandler created a new digital short called “That’s When You Break,” shot specifically for the “SNL 40: Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary” special that aired on Sunday. The premise was about how “Saturday Night Live” cast members sometimes break character and laugh uncontrollably during their sketches. Watch the video below.
Samberg and Sandler began by singing that there have been a number of “classic moments” and “classic moves,” but the one they were going to sing about is just one: “You’re sketch it killing. The audience is having the time of their lives when suddenly it hits you, a case of the giggles and you know that you can’t hide it inside… And that’s when you break!”
Interspersed with Samberg and Sandler singing, “That’s when you break,” were clips of “SNL” cast members laughing during their sketches. We see Phil Hartman, Gilda Radner, Chris Rock David Spade, Amy Poehler, Tracy Morgan, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bill Hader, Joe Piscopo, Rachel Dratch, Will Ferrell and many more losing it in skits. But the ones who constantly broke character, as Sandler and Samberg pointed out four times, were Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz.
After joking how the show’s creator and executive producer “Lorne [Michaels] loves it when you break,” Samberg said, “But we never broke,” which Sandler refuted. He also corrected Samberg who claimed they never smiled through their skits or “undermined a sketch.” It’s pretty funny, and Samberg also references how their film “That’s My Boy” “bombed.” Check out the video for the digital short “That’s When You Break,” and tell us what you think.
