Chappie is expected to win a tight, weak box office weekend in its debut. The robot movie, starring Sigourney Weaver and Hugh Jackman, is on pace for an opening of about $13 million, which would put it ahead of the Will Smith con-man movie Focus ($10 million) and the old-people-having-fun sequel The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel ($9.5 million).
The Colin Firth spy flick Kingsman: The Secret Serviceshould grab fourth place with roughly $8.5 million. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water is on track for the #5 spot with about $7 million.
McFarland, USA and Fifty Shades of Grey are battling for sixth place. Both movies are expected to earn $5.5 million or so, slightly ahead of the new Vince Vaughn movie Unfinished Business and the teen comedy The Duff. Those two releases are projected to hit about $5 million apiece. The Lazarus Effect should round out the Top 10 with $4.5 million.
Fifty Shades of Grey, by the way, has now passed $150 million domestically and $500 million worldwide. All current figures are estimates.
