Johnny Depp, Amber Heard Divorce Update: What We Know So Far About Split

It’s only been one day since it was revealed Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are getting divorced, but the details of the split are already turning into a he said, she said battle. Here Extreme Entertainment reveals what we know so far.
What We Know About Johnny And Amber
Depp and Heard met on the set of The Rum Diary, and began dating in 2012. They became engaged in early 2014, and went on to marry just last year. The estranged spouses, 22 years apart in age, actually held two weddings. They first tied the knot in a civil ceremony in Los Angeles, and then had a larger affair on Depp’s private island in the Bahamas.
In a Marie Claire interview published last November, Heard hit back at claims of marital strife, and called becoming a stepparent to Depp’s two children a “gift.” Still, their first year of marriage was not without drama. The now-former couple infamously had a dust-up with the Australian government after bringing their two dogs into the country without proper documentation and quarantining.
Though she faced up to 10 years in prison for the alleged dog smuggling, Heard said last December she would plead not guilty. That changed this past April, with she and Depp filming a formal apology video. Now just weeks later, and 15 months after they wed, she has filed for divorce.
Heard’s petition, which was filed in L.A. on Monday, cites irreconcilable differences with a separation date of May 22, the same day Depp attended the premiere of his new movie,Alice Through The Looking Glass, solo. The legal document notes they had no prenuptial agreement, and further calls for spousal support. Nothing was indicated about custody of their dogs.
What We Know About Johnny’s Side
Depp filed his own divorce papers in response to Heard’s petition, and asked that her request for spousal support be denied. While he has not personally spoken out about the breakup, his camp is putting the blame on Heard and her alleged inability to get along with his family. It’s specifically being claimed that Heard did not mesh with Depp’s two kids, his mother, and his two sisters.
Depp’s mom, Betty Sue Palmer, was ailing during the course of the marriage, and his team maintains that Heard was unhelpful and unsympathetic to her health battle. Palmer ended up passing away just three days before Heard filed for divorce. It’s also been said the actor’s mother thought Heard was “using” him and treated him poorly.
What We Know About Amber’s Side
Heard has also not publicly commented about the split, but her camp is denying the allegations about her relationship with Depp’s family. In fact, Heard’s team is painting the opposite picture, pointing to a close relationship with not just the movie star’s teens, but also his mom prior to her death. It’s being claimed that Heard regularly visited Palmer in the hospital, and helped Depp manage a nursing staff.
That said, while Heard’s side is maintaining that family relations are not to blame for the divorce, they haven’t offered an alternate cause. And as for the timing of the filing, one source rather cryptically told People, “Amber did what she had to do to take care of herself.”
