James Corden On ‘Howard Stern’: Mariah Carey Refused To Sing During ‘Carpool Karaoke’ (AUDIO)

James Corden appeared on Monday’s “Howard Stern Show,” during which he revealed that Mariah Carey initially refused to sing during his talk show bit “Carpool Karaoke.” Listen to audio from the interview below!
Corden’s popular “Late Late Show” segment sees him and a music superstar singing along to their songs while driving around Los Angeles. The first-ever installment of the recurring sketch featured Carey, but Corden revealed to Stern that “Carpool Karaoke” almost never happened.
The talk show host explained that every single musical artist that they first contacted turned down the bit, but the producers finally managed to get Carey on board through a “chance meeting” with a close connection. But when the time came to film the segment, Corden noted, “She came out and said, ‘I’m not singing today.’ And she went, ‘We’ll just drive around and have a chat.”
Corden recalled on the radio show how he sheepishly responded, “Right, but it’s ‘Carpool Karaoke.’ So without that… And then I thought, I just have to jump into it.” He added, “Even if this bit is just me singing to Mariah Carey, it’s still on the show. It may not be the recurring bit we hope it is, but it’s still probably on the show.”
In fact, Carey even mentioned at the beginning of the sketch, “I’m not singing today, I was up all night.” But Corden told Stern that much to his relief, “She got involved and it was wonderful.” Of course, “Carpool Karaoke” has since gone on to become one of the most popular bits on late night television. Listen below to a highlight from Corden’s “Howard Stern Show” interview!
