Noah Galvin has sparked a strong reaction on Twitter after comments he made about being gay in Hollywood went viral on Thursday.
Vulture published an interview with the 22-year-old star of “The Real O’Neals” in which he criticizes some fellow stars. Galvin, for instance, is quoted as calling Colton Haynes “the worst.” As Extreme Entertainment reported, Haynes recently confirmed his sexual orientation, but Galvin says, “That’s not coming out. That’s f*cking p*ssy bullsh*t.”
“That’s like, enough people assume that I sleep with men, so I’m just going to slightly confirm the fact that I’ve sucked a d*ck or two. That’s not doing anything for the little gays but giving them more masturbation material,” he told the outlet. And when discussing his role on his ABC sitcom, Galvin said of a certain “Modern Family” star, “I’ve thrown Eric Stonestreet under the bus a solid seven times this week.”
He continued, “No, I think as wonderful of an actor as Eric Stonestreet is — I’ve never met him, I assume he’s a wonderful guy — he’s playing a caricature of a caricature of a stereotype of stereotype on ‘Modern Family.’ And he’s a straight man in real life. And as hilarious as that character is, there’s a lack of authenticity. I think people — especially young gay kids — they can laugh at it, and they can see it as a source of comedy, but like, nothing more than that. And I want [my character] Kenny to be more than the funny gay kid.”
Galvin’s remarks further hit at X-Men director Bryan Singer, too, and included saying, “There are enough boys in L.A. that are questionably homosexual who are willing to do things with the right person who can get them in the door.” And in addition to shaming a male guest star for being confused about his sexuality and refusing to “make out,” he also claimed he was passed over for a prior acting gig for being “too gay.”
The candid and blunt comments led the rising star’s name to become a trending topic, where even celebrities weighed in. Alan Cumming, for instance, tweeted, “Bravo @Noahegalvin on this interview. Keep on telling it like it is. #kvelling.” But Stonestreet’s “Modern Family” co-star, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, posted, “Still a fan of his but I happen to wildly disagree with @Noahegalvin’s assessment of @ColtonLHaynes & @ericstonestreet. But yay #FreeSpeech.”
And there is a similarly divided response among everyday people tweeting about Galvin’s statements. The actor actually retweeted one such reaction. “Didn’t agree with everything, didn’t have to. Thank you for being a breath of fresh air, do not stop listening and speaking,” wrote Ryan Houlihan.
Along with hand-clapping emojis, Galvin replied, “Thank you.” For their part, neither Stonestreet or Haynes (or Singer, for that matter), have publicly reacted.
