Carly Rae Jepsen went from a struggling Canadian musician (best known for placing third on “Canadian Idol”), to the newest pop sensation after Justin Bieber heard her sing and signed her as the first artist on his new record label, Schoolboy Records.
Now, the 26-year-old singer is set to tour this summer and release an album this fall.
“[Justin] was home for Christmas, in Canada, and just around the same time my song was starting to play on the radio, and I guess he heard it and he liked it,” Carly told Access Hollywood in a recent interview of how she was discovered by Justin. “The moment that I signed the contract and I flew out to meet him, I had no idea what to expect and he blew away all my expectations.”
Her hit song, “Call Me Maybe,” is currently a Top 10 hit in the states, with two music videos — the official clip and a viral video Justin made, featuring girlfriend Selena Gomez and Ashley Tisdale, which was a complete surprise for Carly.
“I was just at home in Vancouver actually talking to my mom, looking at Facebook and someone had posted on my page,” she told Access of how she first saw Justin’s video to her song. “I was just like, ‘That boy looks an awful [lot] like Justin Bieber and Selena,’ and then I was like, ‘Mom, I’ve gotta go!’”
Despite her newcomer status, Carly is no overnight sensation — she has been performing her music for years and hopes to have a lasting presence in the entertainment world.
“I love that I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow or what’s going to happen in 10 years,” she told Access. “I do know one thing though, and that is if I have my way, I’ll still be writing and I’ll still be involved in music.”
