Fifty Shades of Grey is bound for glory. The BDSM-themed extravaganza had an enormous opening weekend that threatened the all-time record for a February movie opening. The Jamie Dornan-Dakota Johnson sex epic took in $81.7 million for the three-day period, just shy of the $83.8 million record held by The Passion of the Christ for the biggest February opening weekend ever. Still, the film adaptation of the E L James erotic novel more than surpassed box office expectations. For the four-day holiday through Monday, the movie’s total is expected to go up to $90.7 million.
In second place is Kingsman: The Secret Service, the spy action movie starring Colin Firth. It earned $35.6 million in its debut, ahead of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, which landed in third with $30.5 million. In fourth was American Sniper at $16.4 million, leading the movie over the $300-million mark overall this weekend.
Jupiter Ascending, the space adventure starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, finished in fifth place with $9.4 million. It was followed by Seventh Son, which snagged sixth after bringing in $4.2 million. Paddington also took $4.2 million and the #7 spot. The Imitation Game, now in its 12th week, had a haul of $3.5 million for eighth.
Rounding out the Top 10 was The Wedding Ringer ($3.4 million) and Project Almanac($2.7 million).
