Fifty Shades of Grey Earns More Than $500 Million, Continues To Shatter Records

Fifty Shades of Grey reached a box office milestone on Wednesday night, earning more than $500 million globally. The erotic movie, starring Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele and Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey, has also topped worldwide charts for the past three weeks.
It’s been less than a month since Fifty Shades was released but the film, which chronicles the kinky relationship between Christian and Anastasia, is already smashing records left and right. Domestically, the film had the biggest R-rated theatrical release in history when it hit more than 3,000 North American movie theaters on February 13. It also holds the record for having the third highest-grossing opening ever for Universal Pictures.
Fifty Shades’ record-breaking success doesn’t end there, either. It holds titles for the highest Valentine’s Day weekend opening ever and earned more than $36 million during its debut, making it the highest Valentine’s Day opening. Fifty Shades is now also the record holder for the best Presidents’ Day weekend opening.
Overseas, the movie is also shattering records, becoming Universal’s highest-grossing R-rated film ever. So far, the movie has opened in the number one spot in five territories, and has been the number one film at the international box office for the past three weeks. Are you surprised Fifty Shades of Grey is breaking so many records?
