Trevor Noah was named the new host of the “Daily Show” on Monday. He will replace Jon Stewart, who, as Extreme Entertainment previously reported, is stepping down from the Comedy Central series after 17 years.
While the network has yet to make the official announcement, Noah confirmed the news on Twitter. “No-one can replace Jon Stewart. But together with the amazing team at The Daily Show, we will continue to make this the best damn news show,” tweeted the comedian. And Stewart told The New York Times, which broke the news of his successor, “I’m thrilled for the show and for Trevor. He’s a tremendous comic and talent that we’ve loved working with.”
As Extreme Entertainment reported, Stewart announced his retirement from the show last month, explaining that he felt his time on the series had run its course. “In my heart I know it is time for someone else to have that opportunity,” said the star, adding, “This show doesn’t deserve an even slightly restless host, and neither do you.” Stewart noted they were “still working out details” of his exit, and stressed that he wasn’t leaving his career altogether.
Noah may be unfamiliar to “Daily Show” viewers, having only appeared on the series three times. But that may be the point. Comedy Central President Michele Ganeless tells theTimes, “We talked to women. We talked to men. We found in Trevor the best person for the job. You don’t hope to find the next Jon Stewart – there is no next Jon Stewart. So, our goal was to find someone who brings something really exciting and new and different.”
No date has been announced for Stewart’s final episode, or Noah’s first. TELL US: What do you think of the selection?
