Cannes 2012: Theater Roof Collapses, Screenings Canceled Amid Wild Weather

Screenings of "Villegas" rescheduled, and the British Film Institute had to move the site of its Sunday night party indoors.

As wind and rain swept through Cannes Sunday night, part of the roof collapsed at the Soixantième Theatre, the temporary structure behind the Palais that hosts Special Screenings, Day-After screenings and Tributes.
The collapse forced the cancellation of the last two screenings of the night, a special screening of Gonzalo Tobal‘s Villegas and a day-after screening of Christian Mungiu’s Competition entryBeyond the Hills.
A festival crew arrived on the scene early Monday morning and repaired the damage, a festival spokesperson told THR.
Villegas was rescheduled and screened Monday at 11 a.m. and and will repeat Wednesday at 10 p.m at the Salle Bunuel in the Palais. "I feel sad and disappointed because I heard there was a line of people yesterday waiting to see the film," Tobal said just before rushing into the 11 a.m. screening Monday.
Monday’s previously scheduled screenings at the Soixantieme Theatre are to take place as originally planned.
"I have never seen it this bad," said one industry executive about the weather in Cannes.
Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson were among those walking  very soggy red carpet for the premiere of Michael Haneke's Amour (Love) on Sunday night. Several events, like Villa inRocKs & Audi Talents Awards were cancelled because of the bad weather.
The British Film Institute sent out an email on Sunday, directing partygoers to a new, weather-safe venue. "Due to adverse weather conditions here in Cannes, tonight¹s BFI reception will now be held in La Cote at The Carlton Hotel," it said. The event was originally scheduled to take place on the roof of the Marriott Hotel, its regular location in recent years.
For Monday and Tuesday, the weather forecast predicts more rain and temperatures in the 51 to 66 degrees Fahrenheit range.
