As Extreme Entertainment reported, Peterson was indicted last week for reckless or negligent injury to a child in Montgomery County, Texas.
An investigation was launched after the NFL player allegedly beat his 4-year-old son with a “switch” (tree branch), causing injuries.
Peterson, who was deactivated by theMinnesota Vikings after turning himself in, admitted to police that he’d given his son a “whooping” after the boy pushed one of Peterson’s other children.
A lawyer for the athlete said he’s a “a loving father who used his judgment as a parent to discipline his son,” and “used the same kind of discipline with his child that he experienced as a child growing up in east Texas.”
Barkley apparently agrees, arguing that what passes as acceptable discipline varies throughout the country.
“We spank kids in the South. I think the question of about did Adrian Peterson go overboard, but… we all grow up in different environments,” said the former NBA star.
He continued, “Every black parent in my neighborhood in the South would be in trouble, or in jail, under those circumstances.”
Barkley noted, “I’ve had many welts on my legs. I’ve gotten beaten with switches.”
“I think we have to be careful letting people dictate how they treat their kids,” he added.
Jim Rome provided a dissenting opinion.
The full segment also briefly discussedthe Ray Rice controversy, and the issue of domestic violence at large.
