American Sniper Destroys Box Office Competition Yet Again

American Sniper continues to dominate the box office. The controversial but wildly successful war movie is expected to earn approximately $61 million, laying waste to the competition for the second straight weekend. It’s now approaching the $200 million mark overall after setting January and Martin Luther King Day Weekend records last week.
The Jennifer Lopez thriller The Boy Next Doorshould open in second place with $15 million, according to early estimates. Third place is looking like a battle between holdoversPaddington and The Wedding Ringer, both of which are heading toward weekends of about $11 million.
Taken 3 with Liam Neeson and The Imitation Game with Benedict Cumberbatch are circling the #5 spot with roughly $6.5 million apiece, ahead of the historical drama Selma, which is tracking toward about $5.5 million for the weekend.
Meanwhile, the mustachioed Johnny Depp-Gwyneth Paltrow romp Mortdecai is a bomb, opening to under $5 million and a likely eighth-place finish. Strange Magic should open in the #9 spot with about $4.5 million.Into the Woods is projected to earn $4 million and round out the Top 10.
