Fifty Shades of Grey is bound for glory. The BDSM-themed extravaganza is on pace for an enormous opening weekend that could threaten to all-time record for a February movie opening. Early estimates put the Jamie Dornan-Dakota Johnson sex epic at $83 million for the three-day period and $91 million for the four-day holiday.The Passion of the Christ has the biggest February opening weekend ever with $83.8 million, while The Matrix Reloaded is the biggest R-rated debut ever with $91.8 million. Could Fifty Shades of Grey challenge either record? Stay tuned.
In second place is Kingsman: The Secret Service, the spy action movie starring Colin Firth. It’s expected to earn about $35 million in its debut, ahead of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water ($27 million) and American Sniper ($16 million). American Sniper will cross the $300 million mark overall this weekend.
Jupiter Ascending, the space adventure starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, should finish in fifth place with roughly $7 million. Paddington is on pace for $5 million and the #6 spot. Seventh place is expected to be a fight between Seventh Son and The Imitation Game, both of which are tracking toward $4 million.
