Adam Sandler and David Spade appeared on Thursday’s “Good Morning America” to talk about their new Netflix movie The Do-Over, and also revealed which past bad auditions they’d like to “do over.” Watch the full interview below!
In the action-comedy, Sandler and Spade play two hapless guys who fake their own deaths and start over with new identities, only to discover the people they’re impersonating are in even more trouble. Spade said of working with his real-life friend in a buddy movie, “We’ve never done it just us and we didn’t have those other guys around to deal with,” referring to their Grown Ups co-stars and fellow “Saturday Night Live” alums.
“He plays kind of a goofier guy than he usually plays,” added Sandler, to which Spade joked, “I like to play about one character for 20 years and then I switch it.” The Netflix comedy also has its fair share of shootouts and car chases, but as far as doing their own stunts, Sandler said, “I’d say we did, percentage wise, about none of them.”
In keeping with the theme of their movie, the two actor-comedians also revealed botched auditions they would go back and redo if given the chance. Spade said he competed against Jim Carrey competed for a spot on the ’90s sketch show “In Living Color,” admitting, “I think they made the right decision.” He added, “I can’t believe we were at the final audition. I was like, ‘I’d pick that guy. He’s unbelievable.'”
Spade also went on to reveal he “did not have a great audition” for “SNL,” but acknowledged, “I lucked out, but it bombed.” As for Sandler, he joked, “I don’t think I got one thing I auditioned for, so every one of them.” The comedian noted, “It was never good. I’m never good in the room alone.” Watch Sandler and Spade’s full “GMA” interview below!
