Madonna performed a tribute to Prince at Sunday’s 2016 Billboard Music Awards. After an introduction from Questlove, she sang “Nothing Compares 2 U,” before Stevie Wonder joined for “Purple Rain.” Check out the video below.
Madonna’s performance comes just over a month after Prince’s shocking death, the cause of which is still undetermined. It was announced less than two weeks ago that Madonna would honor her late friend’s groundbreaking career during the BBMAs ceremony. And the news was met by mixed reaction.
In fact, thousands ended up signing a Change.org petition calling for someone else to be chosen for the segment. Though they worked together in the past, some argued that there were other artists more fitting than Madonna to honor Prince. But Billboard Music Awards executive producer Mark Bracco defended the decision.
“I think everybody is entitled to their opinion and everyone can have their own opinion,” he told the Associated Press, “but I will say that we are honored and could not be more excited for Madonna to be on the show and to pay tribute to someone that was her friend and her peer and her colleague.” He also revealed that it was Madonna’s camp who first reached out about doing the tribute.
Madonna, however, has not commented on the negative response at all. Watch full video of the BBMAs Prince tribute performance below.
