Celebrities are reacting to the Supreme Court striking down Texas’ strict abortion law. See stars’ Twitter reaction tweets below.
On Monday, SCOTUS announced a 5-3 decision in favor of overturning the state’s legislation, known as Texas Omnibus Abortion Bill or HB 2, which placed restrictions on what kind of facilities could perform abortions. The law mandated that the procedures could only be done in ambulatory surgical centers, and by doctors who had medical privileges at a hospital within 30 miles. Detractors argued that such prohibitions would force a number of abortion clinics to close or stop offering the treatment, therefore putting women’s health in jeopardy.
The majority of the Supreme Court agreed, and declared the “clinic shutdown” law unconstitutional. Justice Stephen Breyer wrote, “There was no significant health-related problem that the new law helped to cure. We agree with the District Court that the surgical-center requirement, like the admitting-privileges requirement, provides few, if any, health benefits for women, poses a substantial obstacle to women seeking abortions, and constitutes an ‘undue burden’ on their constitutional right to do so.”
Now many stars are celebrating the ruling. Olivia Wilde, who is currently pregnant with her second child, tweeted, “Crucial step forward for reproductive rights.” In all-caps Cher posted, “SUPREME COURT SMACK DOWN Of BS TEXAS ABORTION LAW,IS VICTORY 4WOMENS RIGHT 2CHOOSE,PRO-CHOICE DOESNT MEAN“PRO”ABORTION!! #HERBODYHERCHOICE.”
On Instagram, vocal Planned Parenthood supporter Lena Dunham wrote, GO SCOTUS! BLESS! Thank you for protecting the women of Texas and the people who love them! Thank you for sending a booming message that our bodies belong to US!… Love to all you fighters who made your voices known!!!” Star Jones commented on Twitter, “Shouting #Hallelujah that #womenshealth is on the front burner & #SCOTUS came down on the right side of the law!” Russell Simmons simply said, “Good news.” And Amy Brennerman exclaimed, “F*ck yeah.”
Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, also wrote on Twitter, “SCOTUS’s decision is a victory for women in Texas and across America. Safe abortion should be a right — not just on paper, but in reality. This fight isn’t over: The next president has to protect women’s health. Women won’t be ‘punished’ for exercising their basic rights.”
