Personal Shopper director Olivier Assayas dubbed Kristen Stewart “the best actress of her generation” in a new interview about their upcoming thriller, further expressing his desire to work with her in the future.
Personal Shopper marks the second collaboration between Stewart and Assayas, who previously teamed up for 2014’s Clouds of Sils Maria. For her performance in the film, Stewart became the first American actress to win a Cesar Award, the French equivalent of an Academy Award.
In their latest movie, described as a ghost story set in the fashion underworld of Paris, Stewart stars as a woman with a psychic gift who tries to connect with her dead twin brother. The director has worked with many young actresses throughout his career, including Chloe Grace Moretz, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Chloe Sevigny, but Assayas tells Screen Daily Stewart is “the best actress of her generation.”
“Kristen has an infinitely larger range than many actresses of her generation,” notes the director. “She has an inner depth coupled with a spontaneity and naturalness that sets her apart.” Stewart has previously expressed interest in trying her hand at directing, a career shift that Assayas fully supports. “She also has an innate understanding of cinema that makes me believe she could succeed at directing too,” adds the director.
As for a potential third collaboration between him and Stewart, Assayas admits, “There’s nothing in the pipeline.” He continues, “Today, I don’t have a project to propose to her although I would love to have one. I don’t rule it out for the future.” Personal Shopperdoesn’t yet have a U.S. release date, but it’s scheduled to hit theaters in several international territories later this year.
