Mascots are an important part of sports culture in the world, so a lot of time and energy is spent coming up with the mascots for the Olympics and Paralympic games. For this year’s events in London, two adorable mascots were cooked up: Wenlock and Mandeville.
Named after the Shropshire town of Much Wenlock, which hosted a pre-Olympic version of the games, and Stoke Mandeville Hospital, which organized a pre-Paralympic competition, these two mascots are meant to appeal to kids and get them excited about the games, and about exercise. Older audiences aren’t thrilled about the strange looking blobs but children are quite taken with them. Take a look at the video below explaining where they came from!
Although mascots for the Olympic Games are often animals, Wenlock and Mandeville are actually — wait for it — drops of steel. They’re very modern, not just in their sleek and customizable appearance but with their camera eyes that record everything. It’s perfect considering that NBC just announced they’ll be streaming everything from the summer games!
Wenlock and Mandeville might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but they get the job done. Mascots are supposed to embody the spirit of the games while also representing the place where the games are being held.
