Last weekend’s one-two punch has knocked out Hollywood’s heavily hyped new releases at the box office.
Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted is projected to win its second straight weekend, according to early estimates which put the animated romp at approximately $34 million.
Sci-fi thriller Prometheus, meanwhile, should repeat its second-place performance with roughly $21 million.
That’s bad news for the two debuts.
Star-packed 1980s hair metal jukebox musicalRock of Ages will likely open at #3 ($16 million), with Adam Sandler’s latest, That’s My Boy, tracking toward $14 million and fourth place.
Snow White and the Huntsman should earn another $13 million for the #5 spot in its third week, ahead of Men In Black 3 ($10 million) and The Avengers ($8 million).
It’s then a drop to #8, where The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel ($2.5 million) should fend off slowly expanding art house record-breaker Moonrise Kingdom ($2 million).
Pregnancy comedy What to Expect When You’re Expecting should earn $1.5 million for tenth place.
