Madagascar 3 Edging Prometheus in Early Projections for Tight Weekend Race

It’s animals versus aliens in a weekend box office clash that could come down to the wire.
Animated sequelMadagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted and extraterrestrial horror flickPrometheus are in a tight race, with both movies expected to open at more than $55 million.
Right now, projections giveMadagascar 3 the slight edge ($58 million) overPrometheus ($55 million).
Meanwhile, Snow White and the Huntsman is tracking toward a strong $23 million second weekend, ahead of Men in Black 3 ($15 million) and The Avengers ($12 million).
The Avengers, by the way, should increase its staggering cumulative domestic total — the third-highest in history — to about $570 million this weekend.
The chart takes a big dip after that.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel ($3.1 million) should hold off What to Expect When You’re Expecting ($2.7 million) for sixth place.
Meanwhile, misfire Battleship ($2.3 million) has sunk to 8th place, barely ahead of The Dictator ($2 million) and Dark Shadows ($1.5 million).
As always, these initial projections are subject to change.
Gossip Cop will have updates.
What are you seeing this weekend?
