Those Were The Days — All In The Family’s Jean Stapleton Dies

A TV icon from the 1970s has passed away.

Jean Stapleton, who played Archie Bunker’s wife Edith in All in the Family, died Friday in her New York home, RumorFix has learned.

The actress was a veteran of stage and was in several films including You’ve Got Mail, but nothing was as memorable as the character she played opposite Carroll O’Connor. The woman, who was often called a “dingbat,” won three Emmys for the role.

Carroll wrote about his co-star in his 1998 autobiography:

“The benign, compassionate presence she developed made my egregious churl bearable.”
