When Justin Bieber’s Comedy Central roast airs later this month, some of the controversial jokes will be missing from the show. On Monday, the network announced that bits referencing the late Paul Walker have been cut.
“Roasts often push the limits of good taste and we give the participants full rein to try things knowing we have the edit to shape the show. Sometimes the line is discovered by crossing it. The Paul Walker references will not be in the telecast,” says a Comedy Central rep.
As Extreme Entertainment reported, Kevin Hart led the roast, which was taped on Saturday at Sony Pictures Studio in Los Angeles. Fellow roasters included comedians like Chris D’Elia, Jeffrey Ross, and Natasha Leggero, as well as Hollywood stars ranging from Snoop Dogg to Martha Stewart. There was a TON of eyebrow-raising material that targeted virtually every aspect of Bieber’s life, and, as is common practice with the Comedy Central roasts, the participants also went after each other.
In addition to comments about Walker, there were reportedly also jokes that referenced Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robin Williams. But in a press conference immediately following the taping, Bieber made no secret about what bothered him most. As Extreme Entertainment reported, when asked what was the most offensive bit, the superstar replied, “There was a lot of offensive jokes tonight. I didn’t particularly like the Paul Walker jokes.”
Another roaster, Ludacris, who starred with Walker in the Fast and Furious franchise, was reportedly angered as well, particularly as one of his songs was used in the mockery. When Ross was at the podium, he connected Bieber’s suspect driving skills to those of Walker, and invoked the title of Ludacris’ “Move B*tch. Ross said, “‘Move b*tch, get out of the way!’ is what Paul Walker should’ve told that tree. Too soon? Too fast? Too furious?” Ludacris could be seen motioning to cut afteward.
Walker, of course, died in a fatal car crash in 2013. Furious 7, which was completed after his death, opens in theaters in April. Among the other lines referencing Walker, “SNL” star Pete Davidson said, “Just this past year, Justin got arrested for drag racing. Unfortunately, it wasn’t with Paul Walker.” After some audience groans, Davidson said, “What? He’s doing great! He’s got a movie coming out!”
And Leggero, in a diss of Stewart, said, “I’m not saying Martha Stewart is old, but she needs a new Walker more than the Fast and Furious franchise.” What do you think of the decision to cut the jokes?
