Pitch Perfect 2 Sings To Top Of Box Office For Best Musical Opening Ever

Pitch Perfect 2 hit all the high notes in its debut weekend, opening to $70.3 million, far above expectations. The sequel had a hefty haul of $27.8 million on Friday alone, and the Elizabeth Banks-directed comedy has now broken the record for the biggest opening weekend ever for a musical. It’s also worth noting that the first Pitch Perfect earned $65 million total for its entire domestic run in 2012. The second installment passed that and then some in just three days.
The victory meant defeat for Mad Max: Fury Road , which debuted to $44.4 million. That was still enough to score second place, though, while Avengers: Age of Ultron dropped down to third for the first time since its mega-release earlier this month. With $38.8 million in ticket sales this weekend, the Marvel movie’s cumulative hall now stands at an impressive $372 million so far.
It was a big drop down to the number four spot, where the critically-panned Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon comedy Hot Pursuit brought in $5.8 million. It was followed byPaul Blart: Mall Cop 2 and Furious 7, which were just about tied at $3.6 million. With $3.2 million, The Age of Adaline placed seventh.
Rounding out the Top 10 were Home ($2.7 million), Ex Machina ($2.1 million), and Far From The Madding Crowd ($1.3 million). What did YOU see this weekend?
