Blake Shelton gave a special performance for Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb on the “Today” show on Tuesday. Watch below!
Shelton was on the morning show to promote not just his new album, but also The Angry Birds Movie and the season finale of “The Voice.” Unsurprisingly, though, the co-hosts wanted to talk about his romance with Gwen Stefani. In fact, they were particularly confused by the couple’s new duet, “Go Ahead And Break My Heart.”
“The words are ‘go ahead and break my heart,’ and you’re singing it to this girl who you clearly love. So we don’t get the words versus the vibe,” Kotb told Shelton. But he explained the song is about choosing to embark on a romance together even though they knew it could end badly. “It was hard to kind of let our guards down again, ” he said.
Shelton went on, “It’s like, ‘I know something bad is going to happen, because it always does, so let’s just get it over with now.'” Gifford then wondered, “When do you know, ‘Too bad, I know I’ve been hurt before, but I’m going for this’?” The country superstar answered, “I think you can see the look on our faces.”
Kotb next wanted to know if Shelton will be returning to “The Voice” this fall. “I’ve heard many rumors that I’ve been fired,” the veteran coach joked. “I don’t plan on going anywhere. I’d like to stay there as long as I can.” The singer amusingly went on to confirm that the “moron” (Adam Levine) is “coming back, too.”
As for the performances, Shelton sang his old song “Honey Bee,” as well as “Friends” from The Angry Birds Movie.
