Kathie Lee Gifford reacted on Tuesday’s “Today” show to Justin Bieber bashing awards ceremonies and complaining about the pitfalls of fame by advising the singer to “get out of show business if it’s making you so unhappy.” Watch the video below!
As Extreme Entertainment reported, Bieber called awards shows “fake” in an Instagram post written just hours after Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards. The pop star performed at the show and also took home the award for Top Male Artist, but he later wrote, “I don’t know about these award shows… I don’t feel good when I’m there nor after.” Bieber went on in his lengthy post to say the audience at awards ceremonies put on “fake smiles” and he feels judged by them, and he “can’t feel the recognition” of his peers at the ceremony, even when he wins.
Gifford read Bieber’s comments on the daytime talk show, and also noted how the singer recently canceled meet-and-greets after his concerts and announced he’ll no longer take pictures with fans. “I have one suggestion for him, and that’s get out of show business,” the co-host said. “If it’s making you so unhappy. Or don’t attend the awards ceremonies.”
“You’re not supposed to be doing it for you, you’re supposed to be doing it for your audience,” Gifford added. “If you want to last and have a multi-decade career as so many people do, then do everything you do for your fans. That’s where you’re going to get your fulfillment is serving other people and not being the center of the universe.” The talk show host acknowledged Bieber as a “brilliant young performer,” but insisted that “if he’s not getting the joy he says he craves from just that, maybe it’s time he step back for a while and think about what might make you happier in life.”
In regard to canceling photo ops, Gifford further said, “It’s not fair to do that to your fans,” adding, “I hope I’m saying that respectfully. I’m not trying to put him down… I don’t think he realizes what kind of sting it has to his fans.” The co-host felt that Bieber “has a lot of goodness in him,” but “he’s letting the negative control him.” She added, “If the negative is having that much of an affect on him, he’s going to do so much damage to his career.”
And finally, Gifford responded to Bieber writing in his post, “I’m getting awarded for the things that I’m doing and not for who I am.” She asserted, “You do get an award for what you do. He’s not going to get an award just for being Justin. It’s for his music.” The “Today” co-host concluded, “We keep saying, ‘He’s young, he’s young,’ but you know, we’ve been saying that for about four years now. It’s time to [grow up].” Watch Gifford’s full message to Bieber in the video below!
