Harambe the gorilla was shot dead at the Cincinnati Zoo on Saturday after a 4-year-old boy fell into the animal’s cage, and now celebrities are reacting to primate’s death. See star reactions below to the gorilla’s shooting.
On Monday, Cincinnati Zoo Director Thane Maynard defended the zoo’s decision to use lethal force on Harambe after the small child climbed through a barrier, fell 15 feet into the gorilla’s enclosure, and was dragged by the large animal, who suffered a concussion. “The idea of waiting and shooting it with a hypodermic was not a good idea,” Maynard said at a press conference. “That would have definitely created alarm in the male gorilla. When you dart an animal, anesthetic doesn’t work in one second, it works over a period of a few minutes to 10 minutes. The risk was due to the power of that animal,” explained Maynard.
Katharine McPhee tweeted, “This is why I hate zoos! This is so messed up. This poor gorilla.” Lisa Vanderpump shared, “Oh the poor gorilla, he did nothing wrong, if you watch the video, so sad..as a mother I would’ve jumped in too.” “WHY DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING. SAVE OUR ANIMALS,” added “Vanderpump Rules” co-star Stassi Schroeder.
Ricky Gervais expressed, “It seems that some gorillas make better parents than some people.” DL Hughley also took aim at the child’s parent, tweeting, “If you leave your kid in a car you go to jail, if you let your kid fall into a Gorilla Enclosure u should too!” Robin William’s daughter Zelda Williams tweeted, “You ‘display’ wild animals in cages for money, but then you don’t properly protect them or the kids visiting them from each other? Shameful.” She added in subsequent tweet, “How was the gorilla enclosure not child proof? You’re dealing with an endangered species & yet you’ve made it possible for kids to fall in?”
In a now-deleted Facebook post, the child’s mother, Michelle Gregg, spoke out about the incident, defending her parenting skills. “God protected my child until the authorities were able to get to him. My son is safe and was able to walk away with a concussion and a few scrapes… no broken bones or internal injuries,” she wrote. Gregg added, “As a society we are quick to judge how a parent could take their eyes off of their child and if anyone knows me I keep a tight watch on my kids. Accidents happen.”
