Vanessa Hudgens was accused of cultural appropriation on Monday after she posted a photo of herself wearing a dreamcatcher as a headpiece. See right and below.
Hudgens shared the picture on both Twitter and Instagram, writing, “Chin up, Princess… Or the crown slips #monday @riawnacapri @beautycoach_com.” Riawna Capri is a stylist who originally posted the photo on her own Instagram page on Sunday, directing fans to her Beauty Coach blog for “curly hair tips.” She gave credit for the headpiece to the Philippines-based crafts company, Purple Beetle.
Purple Beetle also posted two different pictures of Hudgens wearing the dreamcatcher, touting that it’s “handmade.” But while many commented on how pretty the actress looks in the snapshots, others are objecting to Hudgens using a part of Native American culture as a hair accessory. One person clapped back On Instagram, “Why are you like this???”
The commenter went on, “You constantly go out of your way to disrespect cultures to look ~boho. It’s rude as f*ck. Don’t put dreamcatchers in your hair! That you have to constantly be told not to do this and dragged means you are not listening and it’s frustrating af!!” Another person responded to the remark by writing, “PREACH. I love her and all but it’s culture not costume or whatever.”
Hudgens has been criticized for Hindu cultural appropriation several times over the last few years. In both 2013 and 2014, she was slammed for wearing a bindi. This new incident comes just hours after Justin Timberlake was accused of appropriating black culture during a Twitter dispute that erupted after the BET Awards. See the full photo Hudgens shared on social media below.
