Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 Soars To Opening Weekend Blowout Win

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 is expected to crush the box office competition, earning roughly $128 million in its opening weekend, according to early estimates. The blockbuster Jennifer Lawrence sequel should easily win the #1 spot.Mockingjay – Part 1, the third movie in the franchise, is tracking toward a lower domestic opening than its predecessor, Catching Fire, but should still have one of the year’s biggest debuts.
Meanwhile, it looks like animated film Big Hero 6 will take second place with approximately $21 million. It is now well past the $100 million cumulative mark in its third week. The #3 spot should be a fight between the Matthew McConaughey-Anne Hathawayspace adventure Interstellar and the Jim Carrey-Jeff Daniels comedy Dumb and Dumber To. Those movies are currently on pace for about $14 million apiece.
Then things get very tightly packed. Six films — Gone GirlBeyond the LightsSt. Vincent,FuryBirdman and The Theory of Everything— are each expected to hit between $1.5 million and $2.5 million for the weekend. Their exact order is too difficult to predict from early estimates. Extreme Entertainment will have updates as the chart becomes more clear. What are you planning to see?
