Justin Bieber is celebrating his Teen Choice Awards nominations just two days after slamming awards shows.
As Extreme Entertainment reported, Bieber posted a lengthy Instagram message about his distaste for awards ceremonies on Monday after apparently having a bad time at Sunday night’s Billboard Music Awards. Though he performed and gave a short speech to accept Top Male Artist, the singer candidly admitted afterward that the experience was far from pleasant. “These award shows seem so hollow. I get the premise is to award people for their accomplishments,” he wrote, “but is it really?”
Then on Tuesday, the first wave of nominees for the 2016 Teen Choice Awards was announced, and it was revealed Bieber scored multiple nods. He’s up for Choice Male Artist, Choice Song: Male Artist (“Sorry”), and Choice Male Hottie. And on Wednesday night, he surprisingly pointed all that out.
Along with an image listing the nominations, Bieber tweeted, “Thanks @TeenChoiceFOX.” He also included the link for fans to vote on the all the categories. At first glance, the move may seem hypocritical.
But Bieber did stress in his anti-awards shows Instagram post that he is appreciative of those responsible for such events. “No disrespect to anybody at any of the shows or the people running it,” he wrote. “Nothing but love for you guys and your support.”
Bieber further noted, “I am privileged and honored to be recognized by my peers in but in these settings I can’t feel the recognition.” With that said, though, fans probably shouldn’t expect to see the superstar in the Teen Choice audience on July 31.
