Merrick “So You Think You Can Dance” Audition Video: 10-Year-Old Kicks Off “Next Generation” Premiere – WATCH!

“So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation” premiered on Monday with a 10-year-old getting a standing ovation for his robot dance. Watch below!
For its 13th season, “SYTYCD” is exclusively featuring kid dancers between the ages of 8 and 13. And the first episode kicked off in Los Angeles with 10-year-old Merrick. Already a surfer with a goal of one day becoming a robotic engineer, the young boy’s love of robots inspired his moves.
Doing a freestyle hip-hop routine, he stunned returning judges Nigel Lythgoe, Paula Abdul and Jason Derulo with his start-and-stop movements. All three ended up giving a standing ovation. “All of a sudden you started hitting really hard,” Lythgoe told him. “That was ridiculous!
Abdul told Merrick, “You’re incredible. Just the fluidity of your movement and how you hit so hard… It’s awesome.” And Derulo exclaimed, “What a great way to start. It really just shocks everybody.” Indeed, Lythgoe admitted he wasn’t expecting it to go so well.
In the end, Merrick received three yesses to move on to the next round, which is what’s being called the Dance Academy. There, past “SYTYCD” all-stars will choose which young contestants move on and work with them throughout the season. Check out full video of Merrick’s audition below!
