The stars of X-Men: Apocalypse are the new box office superheroes this Memorial Day weekend.
The latest installment in the Marvel franchise, which once again stars Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy, is expected to be number one on the Top 10 chart for the four-day holiday period. The film is slated to open with $80.3 million total for Friday through Monday. That’s nowhere near as high as the recent debut of Captain America: Civil War, but a respectable amount nonetheless.
The same can’t be said for Alice Through The Looking Glass, a sequel to Alice In Wonderland. The Disney movie is a shoo-in for second place, but disappointing with a projected $40 million in ticket sales. Meanwhile, last week’s chart-topper, The Angry Birds, should land in third with about $20.1 million.
Captain America: Civil War may add $21.4 million to its still-growing haul to nab the number four spot. Box office receipts of $11.7 million would put Zac Efron and Seth Rogen’s Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising in fifth. Following in sixth will probably be The Jungle Book if it brings in $10.2 million.
And The Nice Guys, which pairs Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, is eyeing $8.6 million for a seventh-place finish. Potentially rounding out the Top 10 this Memorial Day weekend are Money Monster ($5.5 million), Love & Friendship ($3.5 million), and Zootopia ($1.2 million). All figures are currently estimates.
