Paul Bettany took to Twitter on Saturday to defend Johnny Depp amid allegations of domestic violence.
As Extreme Entertainment reported, on Friday Amber Heard accused Depp of verbally and physically abusing her throughout their 15-month marriage and was granted a temporary restraining order. She filed for divorce last Monday, two days after she claims he violently threw an iPhone at her, leaving her face bruised. Though Heard maintains this is a pattern of behavior, Depp’s attorney has claimed the actress is merely trying to get a “premature” financial settlement.
While Depp himself has not commented on the situation, his former co-star Bettany has come to his defense. He tweeted, “Known Johnny Depp for years and through several relationships. He’s the sweetest, kindest, gentlest man that I’ve ever known. Just saying.”
That didn’t go over well with at least one follower, who wrote back to the actor, “Just because you get on well with someone, does not mean they are incapable of doing something horrific. Just saying….” Bettany then replied, “Well that might be true, but I probably have MORE insight than say… Uh… You… Or all the other piranhas on the internet.”
He went on to add, “All I’m saying — Domestic violence is a serious allegation. Trial by twitter is unhelpful. Let the facts come out before rushing to judgment.” Bettany, who is married to actress Jennifer Connelly, and Depp have starred together in The Tourist,Transcendence and Mortdecai.
As Extreme Entertainment noted earlier, Mickey Rourke also spoke in defense of Depp’s character on Friday, saying his longtime friend was “not a violent guy.” On the flip-side, Rainn Wilson deemed him a “wife beater” on Twitter, and many have been using hashtags like “#IStandWithAmber” and “#ImWithAmber” to show support for Heard. Depp and Bettany are pictured above at the London premiere of Mortdecai last year.
