Amber Heard is suing Johnny Depp’s friend Doug Stanhope for defamation after the stand-up comedian claimed the actress is blackmailing Depp and lying about his alleged domestic abuse.
As Extreme Entertainment reported, Stanhope wrote a column for The Wrap last week detailing what he allegedly witnessed go on behind-the-scenes of Depp and Heard’s marriage. The comic claimed that Heard was the one who was “abusive,” and that he had “watched her manipulate and f**k with [Depp] for years.” Stanhope further claimed to have had a conversation with Depp in which the actor told him that Heard was “threatening to lie about him publicly in any and every possible duplicitous way if he didn’t agree to her terms.”
And now according to People, Heard has filed a defamation lawsuit against Stanhope, saying in her court filming that the comic “orchestrated a plot to write an article… which falsely accuses plaintiff Amber Heard of ‘blackmail’ and other criminal behavior towards her husband, Johnny Depp, from whom she is seeking a divorce.”
Heard insists that Stanhope’s allegations are “completely false and defamatory,” and that they have caused her “tremendous harm.” Her legal papers also include more details about Depp’s alleged abuse towards her, claiming that the actor had “hit and kicked Heard on numerous occasions, has thrown objects at her, [and] at one point suffocated her to the point where she feared for her life.”
Heard’s attorney says the actress is seeking the “maximum possible jury award,” which she plans to donate to a domestic violence charity. The lawyer further alleges that Stanhope, along with other unnamed members of Depp’s team, worked “as part of a coordinated effort” to defame Heard, and “knew the statements about Heard in the Defamatory Article were completely untrue and fabricated, and they did not care, because their only concern was helping Depp by trashing the reputation of his wife, who loved Depp, even though she had been repeatedly physically and verbally abused by him.”
