This summer’s science-fiction blockbuster “Battleship“ may tell the tale of the US Navy battling back invading aliens bent on taking over the earth, but the film is steeped in military reality. Director Peter Berg has given RyanSeacrest.com audiences an exclusive look into the pre-production process of creating this seafaring adventure.
To ensure the military authenticity of the film, Rihanna, Alexander Skarsgard, & Taylor Kitsch were integrated side by side with real life United States Navy officers as they ran scenarios as if they are attacking a hostage ship! Berg also included currently enlisted Navy officers in the bridge scenes, combat information centers and engine room.
“These real characters had a certain level of realism, responsiveness, and understanding of what was really happening,” said Military Technical Advisor Rick Hoffman. The everyday seamen inspired the cast and crew just by their presence in the film. “These private access tours,” Kitsch said. “[They were] something we were super fortunate to be a part of.”
Rihanna plays the character of Raikes, an officer who loves anything and everything about weapons. The Navy’s Jacqueline Carrizosa was assigned to Rihanna as a technical advisor tasked to helped teach the Barbadian beauty how to accurately portray the tough-as-nails weapons specialist. Rihanna learned basic military lingo, weapon handling, and different military postures, including standing at ease, attention and saluting. “I really just lived and breathed in [Jacqueline's] mindset,” RiRi explains.
