Kanye West praises Caitlyn Jenner in a new interview, but also accidentally calls her “Bruce.” Watch below.
As Extreme Entertainment reported, West sat down on Tuesday for a wide-ranging talk for SHOWstudio. He spoke at length about his career, his outlook on life, and his family. That includes the Kardashians, as we noted earlier, but also Jenner. The transgender star essentially became West’s father-in-law when he married Kim Kardashian, but while they’ve never been particularly close, the rapper has newfound respect for the Olympian.
Asked for his initial reaction when he found out Jenner would be transitioning from male to female, West admits, “You know the first thing I did think about is I thought about black radio hosts maybe, possibly, making jokes about it because the black culture is generally so homophobic.” He recalls predicting the “news cycle” would have something to say about “this rapper has this transgender person in his family.”
“But then it was like, ‘F*ck what people say. F*ck what people think,'” says West. “I just feel so proud to be in a family that has so many people breaking ground for the generations to come.” He goes on to say, “I feel proud… that I can be next to a wave of ‘this is who I am.’ And that is all I’m about.”
West offers an extended analogy to explain his understanding of Jenner’s position, saying, “To let your life be controlled by public opinion would be like asking to sit in traffic for the rest of your life. Meaning, you want to turn this way, but there’s a car right here that says this… That’s public opinion. And Bruce just got off [at] the exit sign and drove as fast as he wanted.”
The performer immediately catches himself with the name slip, and sincerely says, “Oh, I’m sorry. It’s disrespectful to use that name. I’m sorry.” West confesses, “I’m still getting acquainted with what’s politically correct and not politically correct, because it’s new, it’s modern.” Check out the video below beginning at the 1:01-mark, and tell us what you think.
