Bill Cosby Thanks Eddie Murphy For Refusing To Play Him In SNL 40 Sketch

Bill Cosby has thanked Eddie Murphy for not portraying him in the “Celebrity Jeopardy!” sketch on Sunday’s huge “SNL 40: Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary” special. In a new statement through his rep, the sitcom icon and alleged serial rapist said, “I am very appreciative of Eddie and I applaud his actions.”
There was a lot of speculation following “SNL 40″ about why Murphy’s much-hyped first appearance on the show in more than 30 years had seemed so short and awkward. In a lengthy stream of tweets on Wednesday, Norm Macdonald revealed that Murphy had actually been approached for what would have been a HUGE surprise role as a drinks-mixing, creepy Cosby in a Video Daily Double during “Celebrity Jeopardy!”
Macdonald, who appeared in the sketch and also helped write it, said Murphy “knew the laughs would bring the house down,” but ultimately decided “the laughs are not worth it… He will not kick a man when he is down.” Kenan Thompson wound up playing Cosby (see video below).
In recent months, dozens and dozens of women have accused Cosby of drugging and raping them. While Murphy famously went after Cosby for lesser reasons during his 1980s standup routine, he apparently felt the current situation was too sensitive. What do you think?
