Gigi Hadid used her “Guys Choice” acceptance speech to pay tribute to Muhammad Ali. Watch below.
Saturday’s ceremony took place just one day after the news of Ali’s death broke. That changed the event’s focus a bit, as John Legend and Andra Day gave performances in the boxer’s honor. Meanwhile, Hadid was the 2016 recipient of the “Our New Girlfriend” award, and addressed Ali’s death while on stage.
“I didn’t get to post anything yet [on social media], so I just want to say Muhammad Ali has touched me so much in my life. I’m so grateful to have met him,” the model shared. “So I just wanted to openly say rest in peace, Muhammad, and you’re the champ.”
Hadid, who appeared emotional, then kissed the microphone and walked off the stage. It’s not clear when or where she had the opportunity to meet Ali prior to his death. She has not commented on Twitter or Instagram.
The full “Guys Choice” ceremony will be broadcast on Thursday, with additional awards handed out to Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts Anna Kendrick, Kobe Bryant, Olivia Munn, James Franco, Kiefer Sutherland and more stars. Check out the clip of Hadid’s comments on Ali below.
