Muhammad Ali was hospitalized for respiratory issues on Thursday. The legendary boxer is said to be in stable condition, but is expected to remain in the hospital for the time being.
Family spokesman Bob Gunnell wrote in a statement, “Ali, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, is being treated by his team of doctors and is in fair condition. A brief hospital stay is expected. At this time, the Muhammad Ali family respectfully requests privacy.”
Ali, 74, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1984, a disease that often results from head trauma from activities such as boxing. He officially retired from boxing in 1981. Ali is an Olympic gold medalist and three-time heavyweight champion. In 2005, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Back in December of 2014, Extreme Entertainment reported that Ali was hospitalized with pneumonia. And while it was considered a “mild” case, the former heavyweight champ spent a few days in a hospital. One month later, Ali was hospitalized again, but for a severe urinary tract infection, which doctors then realized caused the health problems that had earlier been diagnosed as pneumonia.
Ali’s last public appearance was on April 9, 2016. The boxing great attended the 22nd annual Celebrity Fight Night in Phoenix, which benefitted several charities, including the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center.
