NeNe Leakes’ days on the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” may be numbered. The reality star, who is the only remaining original cast member on her series, is asked point-blank on Tuesday’s “Meredith Vieira Show” if she’s ready to leave, and her interview is telling. Watch below.
“I am at a point where I don’t know how much longer I can stay in this situation,” Leakes tells Vieira, referring to the endless drama that dominates the Bravo series. There have been countless false rumors over the years claiming Leakes would be imminently exiting the show, with wrong stories alternately deeming her fired or quitting, but now her enthusiasm for the project really does seem to be waning.
Asked if she’s ever been “embarrassed” by any of her onscreen behavior, Leakes replies, “Absolutely. I’m embarrassed about a lot of things that happened. In the beginning when it started, I was having fun. I would have to say now I am not having as much fun.” This season, Leakes has clashed with her newest co-star, Claudia Jordan, and is seemingly referring to her when she says, “I feel like there are girls that come on the show because they are thirsty… and they are willing to do anything to be on television.”
“I feel like anybody, whether you’re a good person or not, if somebody pushes you up against the wall, you do have a breaking point,” she goes on, adding, “There are times when you will say and do things that you wish you hadn’t said and done. You don’t want to be seen that way. There are times when I do go home and wish I wasn’t seen that way because I am not that person every day. And so I do feel bad about certain things that happen on the show.”
Vieira points out that networks showing reality television can come off as hypocritical, citing MTV promoting anti-bullying campaigns but allegedly encouraging people to fight on “The Real World.” Leakes agrees, saying, “I have to say reality TV has become very nasty,” but argues that “Real Housewives” wasn’t always like that. “I think our show, in the beginning if you will, it was more about reading and being shady and no physical fighting,” she says. “I think as of late, it has become very nasty, because I feel like the networks have to compete with one another. There are some shows that are physically fighting, drinking, and I think they have to now compete.”
Leakes denies being outright told to increase the drama on “Real Housewives,” instead suggesting it may be an unspoken requirement. “I’m not being encouraged to drink or to fight, but I do feel the pressure of turning it up,” she says. Check out the videos below, and tell us what you think.
