Jimmy Fallon took a moment on his show Monday night to pay an emotional tribute to David Letterman and his importance in American pop culture. Watch below!
Fallon, whose “Tonight Show” airs at the same time as Letterman’s “Late Show,” told his audience, “I don’t know how to describe him. He taught us how to do something smart and stupid for comedy…He just wants to have fun and be goofy and he’s always just there when you need him.”
Fallon remembered that following the September 11 attacks in New York City, people tuned in to Letterman for support during a trying moment in American history. “We needed somebody. The city was in shock. We’re all looking for answers. We wanted to see what Dave had to say and we looked at him to say something. And he said something,” recalled Fallon. “He said there’s only one requirement for any of us, and that is to be courageous, because courage, as you know, defines all other human behavior. We needed that. David Letterman is courageous.”
Fallon, who also spoke about how kindly Letterman treated him, went on to wish the departing host a “nice retirement.” As Extreme Entertainment reported, Letterman’s final “Late Show” airs on Wednesday.
